Celebrating the life of

Elizabeth D. Milligan

Passed away on September 04, 2024

Elizabeth D. Milligan

Elizabeth Dorsey Milligan (Beth), 96 years old, went home to be with our Lord on September 4, 2024 in Savannah, Georgia.
Beth was the 13th child born to Frederick and Zella Kate Dorsey on December 4, 1927. The family lived in Bloomingdale for a time and then in later years moved to Savannah. Beth attended and graduated from Chatham School, now known as Savannah High School. She went on to work in the banking and loan service industry, retiring fully at 75 years of age from Bank of America. Beth was a long time member of Thunderbolt Baptist Church and served the Lord by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, directing Vacation Bible School and serving as the church treasurer. Beth loved to travel, garden and take care of her family. She
loved having family over for her most popular fried fish with grits and hushpuppies and her beloved spaghetti dinner! This was when she was most happy, serving the Lord and her family!
In her later years, Beth loved listening to Christian music and reading the scripture. Her all time favorite Bible verse was Phillipians 4:13, which she loved to quote, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Even during the week prior to her passing, she still participated in singing one of her favorite hymns, “Oh How I Love Jesus, because He first loved me.” She could only get out the words “Jesus” and “Loved me,” but the light of Christ was still shining through her eyes. Beth wanted her family, friends and acquaintances to know she was heading to heaven after her life here on earth. It was important to her that they knew this was due to her personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

She would always quote 2 Corinthians 5:8, “...To be absent with the body is to be present with the Lord.”

Beth was predeceased by her loving husband, Cecil Edward Milligan (d.1982); her son, Richard Michael Cook (d. 2017); her parents, Fred and Zella Kate Dorsey; ten brothers, Frederick E. Dorsey, Sidney L. Dorsey, Francis E. Dorsey, George M. Dorsey, John M. Dorsey, A. Calvin Dorsey, William A. Dorsey, Otis W. Dorsey, Bernice L. Dorsey and E. Glenn Dorsey; and three
sisters, Mary Jane Dorsey Newman, Edith Kate Dorsey Caylor, and Sarah Alice “Virginia” Dorsey Martin. With all of these loved ones, it was a glorious family reunion when Beth arrived in heaven!

Beth is survived by her youngest sister, Eleanor Dorsey Gibeaut; two daughters, Linda Diane Cook DeGarady (Steve), and Belinda Jane Milligan Draucker (Chris); a step-daughter, Deborah Milligan King; and two step-sons, Cecil Edward “Bud” Milligan Jr. and Randolph Shelton Milligan. Beth and Cecil, together with their combined families have a large heritage including 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and a host of extended family!

For those wishing to attend, the internment will take place at Hillcrest Abbey East, 1600 Wheaton Street in Savannah, on Saturday, September 14th at 10:30 AM.

A memorial service for Beth will take place at 12:00 noon at the Fox & Weeks Chapel, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, with Reverend Marshall Ray officiating.

Those wishing to send remembrances, please send to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, or

GUEST BOOK

Belinda, as you know I worked with your mom quite a few years at C&S and the main thing I can tell you, is that wherever she was there was bound to be laughter. There was never a dull moment around Beth, and that’s why people love her, including her customers. Every bank has that someone that people will wait on the couch for to help them and your mom was one of those. I’m so sorry that I lost touch with her over the last 10 years or so, she was a joy to know! I’m so very sorry for your loss, but we know for sure, without a doubt, that she is in the presence of the Lord, happy once again!

I wanted to share some pictures that I have of Aunt Beth! She was a devoted wife, a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Friend and any other role she played. She was devoted to our family reunions! She worked tirelessly to make them happen for years and I will forever be grateful! Those reunions bonded me more and more to my Dorsey family. She would invite my family ( my husband and I plus our 6 kids) to her house for a spaghetti dinner every time we were in town! She loved the Lord and wanted to share Him with all the people she loved!! I will always remember the stories of her trip to the holy land. I still picture her as a classy and beautiful lady, who could do it all!! (work, family, involved in church and look like a million bucks while she did it!!) Her disease changed her and it was hard to see her struggle over the years, but every visit with her let you know that she still loved you and she still loved the Lord! There are not enough words, or pictures to honor this special lady. I praise God for every minute of conversation, for every hug, and every memory!! Until we meet again!❤️
